In recent years, women’s sport has experienced a surge in visibility, participation, and commercial interest. While cultural shifts and advocacy have played a major role, one cannot ignore the powerful influence of technology in accelerating this growth. From broadcasting advancements to data analytics, technology is helping bridge the historical gap between men’s and women’s sport, opening new doors for athletes, fans, and sponsors alike.

Broadcasting the breakthroughs

One of the most transformative impacts of technology in women’s sport has been in media coverage. Where once coverage was minimal or relegated to obscure time slots, digital platforms and streaming services have changed the game. Today, matches, races, and competitions can be watched live across the globe with just a few taps on a device.

Social media has further democratised access. Athletes no longer need to rely solely on traditional media for exposure—they can build their own followings, engage directly with fans, and attract sponsorships. Platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube have empowered female athletes to become content creators and brand ambassadors in their own right.

Level playing field with data and performance tech

Advances in sports science and performance tracking have also contributed to the rise of women’s sport. Wearable technology, GPS tracking, and video analysis are no longer limited to elite men’s teams. Female athletes and coaches now have access to the same cutting-edge tools, allowing for enhanced training, injury prevention, and game strategy.

Moreover, the collection and analysis of performance data in women’s sport has helped dispel outdated myths about capability and endurance. These insights have paved the way for better-informed coaching, fan engagement, and even policymaking in sport development.

Sponsorship and commercial value

Technology has also made it easier to track the commercial impact of women’s sport. With digital metrics – from engagement rates to audience demographics – brands can now see the tangible return on investment when supporting female teams or athletes. This clarity has encouraged more sponsors to get involved, especially as diversity and inclusion become core values for modern businesses.

Expanding access and inclusion

Perhaps one of the most exciting roles of technology is in making sport more accessible. Virtual coaching apps, online communities, and remote training tools are helping more girls and women get involved in sport, regardless of location or background. E-learning platforms offer coaching and officiating qualifications online, empowering more women to take up leadership roles in sport.

Assistive technologies are also helping athletes with disabilities thrive in para-sport, where women are achieving remarkable feats on both national and international stages.

While the momentum behind women’s sport is certainly a product of long-fought advocacy and changing attitudes, technology has become an indispensable accelerator. By breaking down barriers to visibility, performance, and participation, it is helping to reshape the future of sport into one that is more inclusive, dynamic, and representative.

As we look ahead, continuing to invest in technological innovation – alongside cultural and policy shifts – will be key to ensuring that the growth of women’s sport not only continues but thrives.
