Planning and preparing for success.

A cup of coffee on top of a monthly planner

It’s probably because we grow up associating September with the start of a new academic year, plus the fact that as a football fan this time of year brings the start of a new season, but I love September! I always see it as a bit of a mini new year, and the chance to really review what I want to be doing next.

After a few weeks of Summer adventures, this week I’m back to the normal routine and really trying to focus on what Sport Sister’s core values and areas of expertise are. I’ve moved house and the new office is already getting filled with planners and whiteboards to formalise the priorities for future.

So what does this process look like? Let me take you behind the scenes…..

  1. First, we identify the three main areas that Sport Sister offers the most value and is most needed. For us this is our consultancy/project management services; the podcast; and the resources and advice we provide through our website and these blog posts.
  2. Review what is working well in each of these areas and where improvements can be made. Where are the opportunities for growth and development? Where are the gaps in the market that we can fill? Where is our help most needed?
  3. Develop these into clear actions and a more detailed project plan. There are lots of ways to approach this. I prefer to develop a broader annual plan around our vision, and then a more detailed quarterly action plan that I can review every 3 months.
  4. At the start of each quarter I like to identify the priorities for the next quarter – where I want to focus my time and energy, and what I want to achieve. It helps keep me focused on the things that will have the biggest impact and stop me getting distracted by a new shiny idea!
  5. I often have areas that I’d like to investigate further before committing to, or have some further thinking time around. These get added to a white board so they don’t get forgotten but also to make sure I don’t rush into something that isn’t fully formed in my head yet!

I’m really interested to hear other people’s thoughts on this. Do you see September as the start of a new year? What is your planning process like? Drop me a message on the website or through social media – I’d love to hear all about it.
