Updated for 2026 with the latest participation trends and fastest growing sports.

As we step into 2026, the world of sport continues to evolve, offering new and exciting opportunities for women and girls to stay active, build confidence, and foster teamwork. Emerging sports are not only reshaping the athletic landscape but also breaking down gender barriers, encouraging inclusivity, and celebrating diversity. Here are some thrilling sports that women and girls might want to explore this year.

1. Flag football

Flag football is one of the fastest growing team sports for women and girls globally. A non-contact version of American football, the sport replaces tackling with the removal of flags worn on a player’s waist, making it more accessible and beginner-friendly.

Participation in women’s flag football has surged in recent years, with national federations actively investing in female pathways and grassroots development. The sport’s inclusion in the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games has further accelerated its growth and visibility.

In the UK, more schools and community clubs are introducing flag football programmes for girls, drawn to its fast pace, tactical depth and team-focused nature. With increasing international competitions and clear progression routes, flag football is quickly establishing itself as a serious and exciting option for young female athletes.

With governing bodies reporting double-digit annual growth in female participation in some regions, flag football is widely viewed as one of the breakout sports of the decade.

2. Teqball

Teqball, a fusion of football and table tennis, is gaining rapid popularity worldwide. Played on a curved table, this sport challenges players to showcase their football skills with precision and creativity. Its low-contact nature and emphasis on technique make it an excellent option for girls who love football but want to try something new. Many schools and community centres are introducing teqball clubs, making it more accessible than ever.

3. Drone Racing

Combining technology with competition, drone racing is an exhilarating sport that tests reflexes, hand-eye coordination, and strategy. Girls interested in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) might find drone racing particularly appealing as it blends athleticism with innovation. As leagues for young racers expand, this sport is becoming more inclusive and welcoming.

4. FootGolf

FootGolf, a hybrid of football and golf, is a laid-back yet skillful sport perfect for girls looking for something less intense but still challenging. Players aim to kick a football into oversized holes on a golf course in as few shots as possible. With its emphasis on precision and strategy, FootGolf offers a unique way to enjoy the outdoors and stay active.

5. Parkour

Parkour, or freerunning, continues to attract adventurous spirits around the globe. This urban sport focuses on overcoming obstacles creatively and efficiently, blending gymnastics, climbing, and athleticism. Girls interested in pushing their physical limits while building strength and confidence might find parkour incredibly rewarding. Many urban centres now offer safe, supervised parkour training facilities.

6. Pickleball

This is definitely on my list to try this year! A mix of tennis, badminton, and ping-pong, pickleball is one of the fastest-growing sports globally. Its smaller court size and slower pace make it accessible to players of all ages and skill levels. Girls who enjoy racquet sports but seek a more social, less intimidating environment will likely fall in love with pickleball.

7. Climbing and Bouldering

With climbing making its debut in the Olympics recently, its popularity has soared. Bouldering, a form of climbing done without ropes on shorter walls, is particularly beginner-friendly and fosters problem-solving and perseverance. Indoor climbing gyms offer safe and supportive environments for girls to develop their skills and enjoy this empowering sport.

8. Esports

Though not a traditional physical sport, esports has firmly established itself as a competitive arena requiring strategy, teamwork, and quick reflexes. Girls who are passionate about gaming can join esports clubs and compete in tournaments, building connections with like-minded players while breaking stereotypes in the male-dominated gaming world.

Why Try Emerging Sports?

Exploring emerging sports allows girls to discover their passions, develop new skills, and connect with diverse communities. These activities often emphasise creativity, inclusivity, and innovation, making them ideal for fostering personal growth and confidence. Moreover, trying new sports can lead to lifelong hobbies, career opportunities, and unforgettable friendships.

As 2026 unfolds, the world of sports continues to expand, providing girls with exciting new avenues to explore and thrive. Whether it’s the adrenaline of drone racing, the precision of teqball, or the creativity of parkour, there’s something for everyone.
